Steve Mauel on a mountain hike wearing a blue coat and white hat

I have been a geographic information system (GIS) specialist at the WGNHS since 2010. I make maps, models, and visualizations of the earth’s surface and subsurface. My work helps inform the Survey’s bedrock, groundwater, and quaternary geology projects across the state.

Current projects

I am the lead GIS specialist on the following projects:

  • Southwest Wisconsin groundwater and geology (SWIGG) study in Grant, Iowa, and Lafayette Counties in the Driftless Area
  • Grant County bedrock geology mapping (1:24,000 quadrangles and 1:100,00 county)
  • 1:250,000 geologic map database of southwest Wisconsin (Statemap project)
