- Geologic logs, well constructor’s reports
I help manage the Survey’s database of well records for all of Wisconsin, and I correct legacy errors and update information, particularly well locations. This work is important because well records are often the only information available about what is in the subsurface for some areas. My database work is an ongoing activity as new wells are installed and as new technology makes it possible to better locate older wells. Thanks to new technology I can refine the locations of many wells that were previously poorly or incorrectly located. We have scanned and digitized many well construction reports and logs of the subsurface to make them more widely available. Correcting and updating the database supports the work Survey scientists are doing on Wisconsin’s geology and hydrogeology. It also helps homeowners and consulting geologists. Better data makes better decisions about wells.
My detective skills and knowledge of the old paper files and databases in the Survey archives help me do this job. Knowing what information was available when they were created gives me a sense of their limitations, and of where to go to double-check entries and to find new information.
I like what I do because I am improving a database that is used by our staff, other agencies, and the general public. This helps homeowners find reports for their wells, helps scientists make more accurate maps, and helps everyone who uses well data.
