I am interested in the Precambrian to Paleozoic history of bedrock folds, faults, and fractures in Wisconsin, and how these structures affect Wisconsin’s natural resources today. Most of my research is based on the construction of geologic maps. I use new geologic mapping to solve problems in the geosciences from the plate tectonics scale (such as how subduction zones initiate) to the local scale (e.g. the probability of detecting arsenic across a township).
Current projects
I am currently working on a bedrock geologic map of Grant County, where I am trying to assess how folding and fracturing modifies the way groundwater flows and behaves with respect to Paleozoic bedrock units. In looking at these hydrostratigraphic characteristics, I am investigating whether folding and fracturing increases or decreases susceptibility to surface contaminants, and whether fracture networks mobilize and redistribute aquifer contaminants such as arsenic, potentially altering the probability of arsenic detection in groundwater wells.
I am also actively mapping in the Precambrian rocks of the Baraboo area, where we are piecing together the ancient thrust-belt that formed during Precambrian mountain building.
